Invitation Letter
Dear Colleague:
We would like to cordially invite you to attend an international symposium on psychosocial well-being of disadvantaged children which will be held in Kaifeng, Henan Province, China during November 8-11, 2013.
The symposium will be organized by Henan University Institute of Behavior and Psychology and Wayne State University School of Medicine Pediatric Prevention Research Center. The symposium hopes to bring together a group of experts and scholars to address a variety of issues (e.g., assessment, prevention and intervention, cross-cultural research, resilience, policy and legislation, research ethics and child right protection, child abuse and neglect) among both socio-economically disadvantaged children (e.g., children affected by HIV/AIDS, rural children, migrant children, left-behind children, children of parents with mental health problems) and physically challenged children (e.g., deaf children). The participants will have the opportunity to interact with scholars from both China and overseas to share the most recent research and development in the relevant topics and to explore the possibility of collaborative research.
The participants of the symposium will also have the opportunity to visit a number of famous cultural and historical sites in Kaifeng, one of the Seven Ancient Capitals of China, and surrounding areas (such as Shaolin Temple, a Buddhist monastery in Henan province). Kaifeng is also known for having the oldest extant Jewish community in China, the Kaifeng Jews. The symposium will be held during the Kaifeng Chrysanthemum Cultural Festival, an annual event between 18 October and 18 November every year since 1983. During the festival, chrysanthemums of hundred different types will not only be on show in all festival venues, but they become common features all around the city itself –We are sure that you will enjoy many beautiful scenes of the "city of chrysanthemums". You can find more about the city and its history and culture at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaifeng.
We are currently working on the details of the program and the confirmed speakers to date include Lorraine Sherr from University London College, Jan Ostermann from Duke University, Danhua Lin from Beijing Normal University, Lucie Cluver from Oxford University, Theresa Betancourt from Harvard University, Philips Fisher from University of Oregon, and Maryam Farzanigan from UCLA. We hope that you are interested in participating in the symposium. The organizers will cover room and board and local cultural activities during the symposium for all overseas participants. We know that you are very busy with your other professional and personal commitments, but it would be nice to see you and your colleagues in Kaifeng and for the participants to learn your work. We hope that you can give some consideration and we can discuss the details about the presentation and trip if you are available to attend. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding the symposium.
Attached please find a registration form and also an abstract submission form. If you have question regarding the symposium or abstract submission, please don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Xiaoming Li at xiaoli@med.wayne.edu; or 313-745-8663.
We look forward to seeing you in Kaifeng!
Sincerely,
